New Christian Fiction for the Family

Stephanie Perry Moore is an author who writes Christian fiction for young adults, preteens, and children and has really found an important niche with her stories that feature children who are struggling with peer pressure and their faith. In the past, she addressed issues that high school, middle school, and intermediate school children face on a daily basis. Now Ms. Moore has entered elementary school with two new series, Morgan Love and, partnering with her husband on a series for boys, Alec London.

According to the reviews on Amazon.com, "The Morgan Love/ Alec London Series are chapter book series written for girls, 7-9 years old and boys 8-12 years old. Both series provide moral lessons that will aid in character development. It will also help young girls/young boys develop their vocabulary, English and math skills as they read through the stories and complete the entertaining and educational exercises provided at the end of each chapter and in the back of the book." Wow, great stories and educational resources!

Recommended Books for the Holidays

I'm going to give you the most wonderful link to the 2011 Guide Book to Gift Books published by the Bulletin of the Center for Childrens' Books at the University of Illinois. It categorizes the books by grade/age and has a wide assortment of fiction and nonfiction from which to choose.

I'm also going to recommend just six books that I found to be different than the usual holiday fare that are new to our collection.

Brock Cole's "The Money We'll Save" is a hysterical story about a family who sends Pa to the grocery store to purchase just two eggs and a half pound of flour no more and no less as they were saving their money for Christmas. Pa gets persuaded by the chicken man to purchase a turkey poult (baby turkey) with the thought that it will make a lovely Christmas dinner. Pa brings it home and you can guess what happens next! Food disappears, turkey mess is everywhere, neighbors are complaining about the smell. Will the turkey make it until Christmas? Check it out and find out!

Tami Lehman-Wilzig has written an unusual Hanukkah story called, "Nathan Blows Out the Hanukkah Candles." Nathan's brother Jacob is autistic and is driving Nathan crazy by repeating "Hanukkah is coming! Hanukkah is coming!" Nathan understands that Jacob's brain is wired differently but it doesn't make it any easier to tolerate his behavior. The first day of Hanukkah arrives, the new neighbors join the festivities, the candles are lit, the blessings are said....and Jacob blows out the candle. Nathan is embarrassed in front of his new friend. How Nathan and his family handles the situation is really quite innovative and heart-warming.

"The Christmas Tree Ship" by Carol Crane is the story of two boys whose Grampa's holiday stories always include the story of Christmas Santa and the Christmas Tree ship that sailed from
Michigan's Upper Peninsula to Chicago every year. It tells of the story of the storm that drove the ship under the waves. Sad, yes, but it also tells how the captain's wife maintained that tradition in honor of her husband. Nice historical fiction based on fact.

Another unusual story, "The Christmas Coat: Memories of My Sioux Childhood" by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, relates the story of an Episcopal priest's daughter's experiences during winter on the reservation. The mud is sticky, it's freezing outside, and Virginia's coat is too short and too tight. The reservation relies on donations of clothing but the priest's family is always the last to choose. This year's donations include a grey rabbit fur coat that Virginia would love to have but unfortunately another girl wants that coat. This is a story about selflessness and sacrifice...and the magic of Christmas!

"The Carpenter's Gift: A Christmas Tale About the Rockerfeller Center Tree" by David Rubel is the story of a family down on their luck. They cut down spruce trees to sell as Christmas trees and set up their stand next to a construction site in New York City . The men there see that Henry and his father need help and proceed to unload the truck. All the trees are sold and the workmen receive a tree as a thank you gift. Tin cans and newspaper stars decorate the tree and Henry, knowing that there will not be much of a Christmas at home, stares longingly at it and tucks away a lone pinecone from the tree. Home they go and the next morning they are awakened by trucks full of lumber. The workmen from the construction site have arrived to fix their house. But that's not the end of the story...you'll have to read the book to find out the end! (Hint--what is that saying? Big trees from little acorns grow?)

"Jingle Bells: How the Holiday Classic Came to Be" by John Harris is the story of the composer of "Jingle Bells", James L. Pierpoint. A pastor of a integrated church in Savannah, Georgia, Pierpoint writes the song during a Thanksgiving heat wave. A fun story with some historical background included.

No K-2 til Feb.?! What are we going to do?

Now that story hour is over for this year, you may be wondering what you can do with your children during that lag time between Halloween and National Freedom Day (February 1st). As you know, Kelly Joslin from Iron Oaks visited our Halloween storyhour (the children loved her!) and mentioned to the children some of the upcoming programs.

The Turkey Talk takes place on Thursday, November 11 at 1-2:30 pm. To quote from their flyer, "It's turkey time! Come learn about the star of the season at Irons Oaks. We'll do the turkey dance, make some crafts, and go on a short hike in search of food that a wild turkey would enjoy." This is a great program for ages 4 to 8. Wow! Better hurry! You must register by November 9th! The cost is $5 if you register, $7 if you don't.

For your younger ones (2 1/2 to5 years old) , why not try "Little Naturalists: Seeds!" which takes place on Monday, November 21st at 9:45-11:00 am. Again, to quote the flyer,"Bring your budding naturalist to Irons Oaks to discover the sensational world of seeds. We'll actively explore our woodland, read a story, play a game, and create a unique piece of art." Cool! The cost for this program is $6 if you register, $9 if you don't.

If you're looking for a free program, it's back to the Homewood Library for Lego Club on November 10th at 6:30 pm and a special Holiday Lego Club on December 14th at a special time, 4:00-5:00 pm. And don't forget the library's free Family Holiday Craft Day coming on December 7th at 4:00-5:00 pm. Bring your whole family and create great pieces of art and wonderful memories. And finally:

Registration for February K-2 Storyhour on Wednesday or Thursday will begin on January 21st at the Youth Services desk.

It's hard to believe that this week will be the end of this year's K-2 Storyhour. Our last class will be a Halloween Party, complete with a "haunting" of the library. You can relax...it's just a small Halloween parade throughout the library while in costume. (Bring your camera!) Then it's back to the meeting room for our special guest readers who will bring Halloween to life by stories and discussion.

This session's theme entitled "Community Leaders are Readers" was one of my favorites. Our guest readers included Greg Weiss, speech and drama teacher (and storyteller supreme) at James Hart, Sammy Bacino, owner of racing pigeons which were released in the parking lot to the amazement of the children (it really was awesome!), Mayor Richard Hofeld who with the aid of Claire Schneider read the book "I'm Not", Fireman Bill Wright who instructed the children in fire safety. Kelly Joslyn from Irons Oaks will read the story "Be Nice to Spiders" to our Wednesday storyhour this week to illustrate just how useful these sometimes fearsome aracnids are. Pat Nivens, Park District Commissioner and thespian, will entertain the children with Halloween tales on Thursday. A big THANK YOU to all our guest readers who made this storyhour session so special! Oh, and Happy Halloween to you!

Welcome to my list of New, New, New books for Fall! Robots, aliens, ogres, ghosts, and shadow people predominate--preparing for Halloween already, I guess. Check these out and let me know what you think. I have two favs here. Can you guess which books they are?

Till Death Do Us Bark by Kate Klise--In this story told mostly through letters, Noah Breth's feuding children come to Ghastly, Illinois, to follow a trail of limericks to their inheritance, while Seymour tries to convince Iggy and Olive to let him keep Mr. Breth's dog.

The Ogre of Oglefort by Eva Ibbotson--When the Hag of Dribble, an orphan boy, and a troll called Ulf are sent to rescue a princess from an ogre, it turns out to be far from the routine magical mission they expect.

It's back to school time! It seems the summer flew by. Our summer reading program was super successful, with 777 kids reading...wait for it....11,019 books! Did I just hear a gasp? Oh, that was me... but isn't that unbelievable? Congratulations to all you ragin' readers out there and their parents!

Patrick Carmen has created an app that contains three short 15 minute scary stories that kids can experience by reading, watching a short video or listening as the story is narrated. Carmen hopes it will bring kids to reading, using the tools that they consider essential today. Readers will find the story filled with interactive clues that they can use to unlock more content on the website. Sounds similar to 39 Clues, doesn't it?
Check it out! By the way, this is really scary and is appropriate for 4th graders and above.

Parents and Reading

I am a member of the Illinois Reading Council and receive their journal. In the Spring 2011, Volume 39, Number 2 issue, there's an article titled "Parent Involvement in Reading" by Laurie Elish-Piper that lists 12 things parents can do to bring reading to their children. Here is a brief synopsis of her recommendations for children in K-5:

1. Set aside a family reading time each day or at least several times per week.

2. Give books or magazines as gifts for birthdays, holidays or other important celebrations.

3. MAKE REGULAR TRIPS AS A FAMILY TO THE LIBRARY. (my emphasis)

4. Audio books provide a great way for families to listen to books while driving or relaxing.

5. Institute a 15-minute late-night reading routine at your home.

6. Most elementary age children enjoy reading series books with familiar characters.
(Think Judy Moody, Stink, Captain Underpants, Magic Treehouse, Geronimo Stilton, even Harry Potter.)

7. Play word games together to build your children's interest in words. (Piper suggests Scrabble Flash, Blurt, Bananagrams, and Apple to Apple Junior.)

8. Encourage your children to become aware and interested in vocabulary words around them. (Ms. Sarah uses a Word of the Day in her preschool storyhour.)

9. Stash books where your children will be--in the car, in their bedrooms, and even in the bathroom.

10.BE A READING ROLE MODEL. (Again, my emphasis.)

11. Read comics, jokes, riddles, and puns together.

12. Plan a book swap with your neighbors, friends, or other family members who have children the same age as yours.

K-2 Storyhour

Last week we had a program based on dental hygiene in our K-2 Storyhour. Students from the Prairie State Dental Hygiene program gave an awesome presentation on brushing, flossing, brushing your tongue and all around oral hygiene. I was so proud of the creative questions the children asked. One boy asked what other alternatives there were to mint toothpaste and toothpastes that contained dyes, as he cannot have either. Another asked about brushing your tongue. So proud of my K-2'ers and the dental hygienists!

Free Children's Cognitive Worksheets and Websites

After reading the article "Cramming for Kindergarten Tests" by Noreen S. Ahmed-Ullah in the February 14th edition of the Chicago Tribune, I was shocked at how competitive enrollment at the Chicago magnet schools had become. Who knew a parent would consider hiring a tutor for their preschooler? There are many websites that provide the cognitive learning experiences that were detailed in the article.

I found worksheets for preschool and elementary grades at TSL Books. Com. What's great about this site is that you can choose grade level and skill level. It includes preschool skills such as coloring the word "red" with a red crayon or more advanced skills such as geometry reviews for fifth graders. Lots of options here.

Kidsland.tv is a fun website where a child can learn cognitive or life skills in Playland, learn English or math skills in Studyland, play Sudoku, smart games or brain games in Gameland, read various books in Storyland, or dance in Danceland and sing in Musicland. The graphics are charming and voices funny and I can see where a child would enjoy his experience there. Kidsland also provides the parents with a report card to chart your child's progress.

At Kidslearningstation.com you'll find a variety of worksheets including phonics and some that work with fine motor skills. Again, lots of options here.

These are just three sites I found by searching by "kids cognitive learning". There were many more. I hope this encourages you to take that first step to enriching your child's education. You'll also find it fun and one wild ride!

E-Book Apps for Children's Books

Wow, exciting things are happening in the world of literature! I spent a day last week working with an iPad. I found a couple of picture books to download with the help of the Library Services staff. Each of the books had their own charm. In "Emma Loves Pink" by Piret Raud, a little girl with a charming British accent narrates a story of a little rabbit named Emma who only loves pink until she receives a gift from bashful friend. You can view a portion of the book here.

My favorite story was "A Present for Milo" by Mike Austin. In this story, a cat chases a mouse only to arrive at his birthday party. In this short book, there is a total of 125 animations that you can activate by touching the screen. To view a portion of this book, click here.

In some instances, your child will have the option to hear the books read in another language, have the narrator's voice quieted so they can read without assistance, and, as we've seen, have some books become interactive. There are a few free books available on the iTunes page if you'd like to try it out first and are available for iPad or iPhone.

I'm Bored!

Wow! What parent hasn't heard that lament. All the hustle and bustle of the season leaves you and your child with a letdown after it's all over. I use the Family Fun website to search for crafts for our story hours and love the fact that they also suggest some amusing little or no cost games to play in the house on a dreary day. Try out the Sumo Wrestlers! How about Wall Football?
If you want to learn about a new computer technology, try out Glogsters. Flying penguins, puppies who wag their tails, and other fun graphics allow you to produce your own animated posters. So fun!
For the younger children, starfall.com will allow you to read along with the storyteller. You can also make a avatar of yourself! Just have fun!

Ever feel like you just don't fit in?
In the newest Dear America book, "The Diary of Piper Davis: The Fences Between Us" by Kirby Larson, Piper Davis' life has totally turned around. Her brother Hank has enlisted in the Navy and is stationed at Pearl Harbor. It's 1941 and blackouts are standard fare. Her Japanese neighbors have been sent to incarceration camps and her pastor father has decided to join them to show his support. There's no word from her brother, food rations have been cut, and Piper is learning how intolerant and fearful people can be. My favorite quote:
"...even if we can't do much about the fences that get built around people, when fences get between people, it's our job to tear them down." You'll find this book in our new book section. It is appropriate for 4th thru 7th graders.

"The Gnome's Eye" by Anna Kerz tells the story of Theresa, an Austrian girl whose family has emigrated to Canada after World War II. According to Hazel Rochman of Booklist, Kerz immigrated to Canada as a child in the 1950s, and she drew from her own experiences of the journey in this lively, detailed novel that follows a Yugoslav family from a refugee camp in Austria through a horrific ocean crossing in a crowded ship and finally to their arrival in Toronto. Young Theresa personalizes the struggle, as she describes in her honest narrative her anger at having to leave her friends behind, her failure as she gets Ds at school, her hostile classmates who tell her to “go back to where you came from,” and her grandmother, who calls her “homely.” Theresa's mother finds works as a cleaner and her father as a tailor, but even after they are employed, the family tension and fighting remain. Theresa knows some German, and that helps her reach out and connect with Yiddish neighbors. The immigration drama will hold readers: at first “she cannot talk and understand” in the schoolyard, but it is a milestone when she learns to stand up for herself and say, “Shut up!” This may be found in our new book section. It, too, is appropriate for 4th thru 7th graders.

Last but not least, "Carmen Learns English" by Judy Cox is a great way to introduce tolerance to our smallest readers. Carmen begins school speaking Spanish, her native language. She is teased by other students because of her accent. Her teacher, la senora Coska, speaks Spanish and realizes that Carmen is being teased. She asks Carmen to teach the class simple Spanish words, thus bringing peace and harmony to her class and most of all to Carmen. Carmen brings her understanding of English home to her little sister, completing the cycle. While this is a picture book, I think it is appropriate for anyone, even adults.

Familiars, Deadly Curses, and Dark Magic

Three fantasy books have come in at just the right time--just in time for Halloween! You'll find them in our new book section at the front of the youth department.

The first book, "The Familiars" by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson, involves wizards and their familiars. What's a familiar? According to Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, a familiar is "a spirit often embodied in an animal and held to attend and serve or guard a person." Aldwyn an ordinary alley cat, Skylar the sassy blue jay, and Gilbert the friendly tree frog are left with the daunting task of rescuing their wizards when the evil Loranella captures them. Is Aldwyn truly just an alley cat? Who will save the land of Vastis? This book will be great fun for 4th thru 6th graders.

The second book, "The Crowfield Curse" by Pat Walsh, is set in a medieval abbey. William lives at the abbey and is out collecting firewood when he hears a cry of someone in great pain. Upon investigation, he finds a curious creature with his leg caught in a terrible animal trap. The hobgoblin is unlike anything William has seen--it has a pointed face, furry ears, and a body the size of a cat. William brings it to the abbey for treatment and it warns him that a mythical being doomed by an ancient curse is buried beyond the graveyard. Old magic, deadly curses, and the fae bring this story to an exciting conclusion. This book would be best for junior high students.

Last, but not least, "Reckless" is a book by one of my favorite authors. Cornelia Funke, perhaps best known to you as the author of "Inkheart", has created a world that is based on the fairy tales you've grown up hearing. Only this is a dark world, one of fear and fairies and deadly moths. After his father's death, Jacob discovers Mirrorworld and enjoys his dark adventures there. But when his little brother Will enters Mirrorworld and encounters the Dark Fairy, she curses him. He begins to turn into a stone statue and Jacob will have to risk his life to find the antidote. What will cost Jacob in the end? This book may just give you nightmares--and isn't that the test of a great junior high book? :)

I know it seems like we've just started our summer activities but it's time to register for our fall session of K-2 Storyhour already. K-2 ( kindergarten thru second grade) will meet on Wednesdays or Thursdays, September 8 or 9 thru September 29 or 30 at 4:00-5:00 p.m. We're planning a Teddy Bear Party, learning about safari animals, playing a few games, and making amazing crafts. We've had some requests lately for more African-American literature for boys and girls. While finding new series for boys has been a bit difficult, there have been 4 notable new series for girls.

Stephanie Perry Moore has created 2 new Christian fiction series for girls. In the Yasmin Peace series, 14-year-old Yasmin deals with minor and major issues as she navigates school but her faith helps her along. In another series by Moore, 10-year-old Carmen Browne also finds her faith to be a comfort as she too deals with minor and major issues. These books can be found in our paperback series section.

Nikki Grimes, poet, artist and author, is well-known for her Danitra Brown series. Her new series featuring Dyamonde Daniel has proven to be another home run for Grimes. Dyamonde Daniel is a girl with a powerful take-charge attitude and a heart as big as the world. In the first in the series, "Make Way for Dyamonde Daniel", Dyamonde is the new girl in school who longs to fit in. Confidence is not a problem with Dyamonde but she can't figure out why she hasn't made friends after a week in school. And why is that boy over there so grumpy? Leave it to Dyamonde to find the answer. Third graders will love Dyamonde. Check her out! You'll find her on the junior fiction shelves at J GRI.

Colleen Murtagh Paratore has a new book, "Sweet and Sunny", that features another perky girl, Sunny Holiday. Sunny is convinced that there should be a Kid's Day and is promoting it among her friends, with the thought of introducing her idea to the mayor. Sunny's father is in prison, her mother has lost her job and when a girl insults Sunny and Sunny hits her, Sunny feels hopeless. Her friends encourage her, though, and she's soon off and running. You'll find this book in new junior fiction at J PAR.

"As Easy As Falling Off the Face of the Earth" by Lynne Rae Perkins

Wow, you think you have problems? Ry is on his way to camp when he belatedly opens the "Urgent!' letter he had received from the camp. Surprise! The camp is closed. When the train abruptly stops and he hears the conductor telling a passenger that there will be a 40 minute delay, Ry tries to call his grandfather but there is no cell phone reception. Thinking that he'll get better reception outside of the train, Ry starts to walk further and further away from the tracks-- except the train has started to move, leaving Ry deserted. Ry walks the tracks for miles, his nose starts to bleed, staining an already tattered tee shirt and he finally hitches a ride on a boxcar. Sitting with his legs dangling over the side of the boxcar, one of his loosely tied boots falls into the water. When the train approaches the trainyard in town, Ry jumps off and hurries to hide behind a pile of rubble to avoid security. Unfortunately, he doesn't see the protuding piece of steel that smacks into his head right above his eye, making it immediately blacken and swell.
Now all this happens in the first 25 pages and it just goes on from there. You see, not only is Ry having a bad time, so are his parents and Grandpa. Shattered masts, missing dogs, sink holes, and an airplane with duct tape holding it together all converge to make a humorous and exciting story.

Sid Fleischman 1920-2010

One of my favorite children's authors passed away on March 17th. Sid Fleischman was 90 years old and had written a dearth of books. Known to practically every middle schooler in the country, Fleischman's "The Whipping Boy" won the prestigious Newbery Award in 1987 . Sid Fleischman really knew how children's minds work and wrote his books to captivate and entice them.

Why not take some time and revisit "The Whipping Boy" once again? In case you have forgotten or never have read this book, here is a synopsis: this is the story of a poor boy, Jemmy, who is drafted to take the punishment for the spoiled prince because, after all, no harm shall befall a member of royalty (even if he really needs a spanking.) Prince Horace demands that Jemmy shout or cry while being punished but Jemmy has too much pride. When the prince decides to runaway, he drags along poor Jemmy. But Jemmy was raised on those mean streets and, in the end, Jemmy is the one who saves the prince from himself and others.

There are many other books by Fleishman I'm sure you'll enjoy, the latest being "The Dream Stealer" that can be found in our new book section. Goodbye and thank you, Mr. Fleischman!

New this week are the first three books of the Scooby-Doo graphic novel series, call number J GN SCO. Also new to our shelves are these nonfiction titles: "Guan Yu: Blood Brothers to the End" based on a Chinese legend, call number J GN GUA, and "Beowulf: Monster Slayer" based on a British legend, call number J GN BEO. You'll find thrills, chills, and spills in all of these books!

Changes, Changes, Changes

By now you've noticed the changes in the youth department and perhaps are perplexed as to the location of some of your favorite items. You have probably gotten used to the new shelving in the early reader/board book area. Yesterday we made further changes to tidy up some loose ends. The phonics books have moved to the lower level on the early reader shelves and the board books have moved to their new location beneath the windows in the former puzzle area. They are housed in plastic tubs that are easier for little fingers to use and peruse. This freed up space for our ever-expanding early readers collection.
We now have our Caudill, Coretta Scott King and Newbery award winners moved to their new location on the back wall of the new storyhour room, making it easier for parent and child alike to find that assigned book. Take advantage of our new sitting area, perfect for those third through sixth graders who like to lounge as they read. This space will have further improvements over time so keep your eyes open!
Puzzles and kits can be found hanging just east of the paperback racks. Graphic novels are on the backside of the same shelving unit. Paperback series are on the north wall of the sitting area so if you are looking for Geronimo Stilton, Scooby-Doo, American Girls or any of your fun, favorite reads, you'll find them there.
All in all, it has been an exciting transformation and it's not done yet! You will be truly surprised at what's coming next...but I can't tell you what that is. You'll just have to keep coming in!

The Exciting Adventures of Jeff Corwin

Want a captivating read to while away the hours? Try "Jeff Corwin: A Wild Life". You know who Jeff Corwin is --he hosts that nature show on the Discovery Channel where he's picking up snakes , racing after various mammals and swimming in the ocean with sharks. This book tells the stories behind those adventures. For example, Corwin went on a dive to observe great white sharks. He was in a protective cage, wearing a very heavy diving helmet. The air to the helmet was obstructed and Corwin was unable to attract the attention of others on the dive to get help. He swam out of the protective cage to the boat and only after he had been pulled into the boat did he find out there was a 16 foot great white shark circling him! And what about the time as a child when he ran into the house with a garter snake dangling from his arm--still biting him! And the time a jealous elephant grabbed his arm and shook him like a rag doll! As you can see, there's enough adventures here to keep you captivated for quite some time! Boys, you know that reading can be a little boring at times--too many classics are required reading and, let's face it, they sometimes can be really yawn-inducing! We have a new series for you to try, though, called The Charlie Small Journals. These journals supposedly washed up on shore and there are doubts that Charlie Small, an eight-year-old, really had these adventures. On each book is the plea, "If you find this book, please look after it. This is the only true account of my remarkable adventures." I'll let you decide if they're authentic or not!

"I Am A Genius of Unspeakable Evil..."

Well, I have read the most conflicting book-- "I Am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want To Be Your Class President" by Josh Lib. On one hand, it's all sarcasm and evilness and on the other hand, it's really very touching. Oliver Watson is the typical chubby seventh grader, subject of taunts, criticism and physical abuse at the hands of his fellow students. At least, that's what you see. What you don't see is a seventh grade genius who has found a way to make millions of dollars, a way to make those insensitive louts who plague him pay for their abuse (I love it when the bullies get a cream on their hands that creates zits or gives instant gas when they abuse Oliver) , and a way to deal with his less than attentive father. All those seventh grade mixed-up feelings of frustration, hatred and even maybe that first crush appear in this book. Perhaps the best description of this book would be to cross "Animal House" with "James Bond", add seventh grade
boys and shake well.

Now that all the storyhours have celebrated Halloween, it's time to move on to Thanksgiving, a holiday known for eating lots of your favorite foods and watching football. Little known facts: Did you know that there were 15 men and boys named John on the Mayflower? That the Mayflower traveled at a speed of only 2 miles an hour? That the Indians used cranberries to draw out poison from wounds? That Americans eat almost 45 MILLION turkeys at Thanksgiving? No wonder we're stuffed! Get it? Stuffed? Witches, Aliens and Fifth Graders

We have a new series for juniors called "My Unwilling Witch" by Hiawyn Oram. Rumblewick Spellwacker Mortimer B. (RB for short) is the cat of Haggy Aggy, the unwilling witch. In the first book "My Unwilling Witch Goes to Ballet School" Rumblewick complains in his diary about Haggy Aggy's unability to be a proper witch--imagine, she wants to be a ballerina! Well, we both know that some ballerinas are divas and Haggy Aggy turns out to be the diva supreme! New Avi Book Coming!

In September, the new Avi book, Murder at Midnight, will be released. I scored a copy at the ALA conference last week and enjoyed it thoroughly. Premise: Master Magnus is a magician and a philosopher in Italy in 1490--strange combination, no? Being a magician pays the bills but with a superstitious monarch in charge, Magnus must be wary of drawing undue attention to himself. Fabrizio, the street kid who is also Magnus' assistant, opens the door one day to find a mysterious person shrouded in a monk's robe, warning that Magnus is in danger. Too late, it seems, as Magnus is hauled to jail shortly thereafter. Using ignorance as a weapon, a plot to overthrow the king gains momentum and it is up to Fabrizio to solve the mystery of who is using Magnus to further their own agenda. Throw in a printer's devil, a coffin and a room full of bones and you have a recipe for a great read! Look for this awesome book soon!

Library construction and new paperback series

Well, things are just moving right along with our library renovation. By now you'll have noticed the colorful paint and wallpaper and beautiful landscaping. I can tell you that when the interior construction is all finished, you'll be blown away! The Youth Department will have some new shelving, a larger play space and our own story hour room. Color and function will rule here soon!

I also wanted to let you know about three new series I have purchased. All you second thru third grade horse fans will be reaching for the Bella Sara series by Felicity Brown. Third thru sixth graders will welcome the Phantom Stallion series by Terri Farley and the new Vet Volunteers series by Laurie Halse Anderson. I have also expanded our selection of the Geronimo Stilton series.

I have a new favorite book--Wild Things by Clay Carmichael. Zoe has been sent to live with Uncle Henry when her mother passes away. After living with a mentally ill mother who forces Zoe to raise herself, Zoe has a hard time trusting anyone after her mother's suicide. In her mind, "everyone leaves." Uncle Henry, a fiery red haired reclusive artist and heart surgeon, has his own issues with trust after losing his wife to cancer. The stray cat that lives under the house sees a kindred soul in Zoe, yet holds back, fearing she too will leave. All three struggle to find love and trust in another human being. Well written and immediately engaging, you will struggle to put it down before bed! This book is best for fourth thru eighth graders and I think it's an award winner!

Brides, Bums, and Monsters

It's that time of year when all little girls dream of weddings and brides. In "How to Get Married by Me the Bride" by Sally Lloyd-Jones and Sue Heap, our little bride gives sage advise as to the best way to insure you are marrying the right person. For example, "...NEVER get married when it's dark because you won't be able to see and you might marry the wrong person." The illustration shows the girl marrying a buffalo! This book will certainly keep you laughing!

If you are the parent of boys, I know you're familiar with the chicken butt joke. ("Guess what? Chicken butt!") Well, in "Chicken Butt" by Erica S. Perl, a boy irritates his father with that refrain until Dad has had enough. The son starts in again with "Hey, you know what?" and promises he won't say chicken butt. We all know that he won't keep all of that promise, don't we?

In "I Need My Monster" by Amanda Noll, Ethan's monster has gone on vacation for a week. How is he going to sleep without his monster, Gabe? Ethan knocks on the floor to let other monsters know his needs and interviews monster after monster. Some have manicured claws and that just won't do. Some have the required jagged claws but are either girl monsters (ew!) or have extra long tongues that don't look too threatening. Finally the intimidating Gabe returns and things go back to normal.

Fairies are here!

We have just processed the new Disney Fairies series and they are flying off the shelf! If you are in first through fourth grade, you'll enjoy the adventures of Tink, Rosetta, Beck, Prilla, Fira, Fawn and Bess as they face difficulties and find solutions to situations you yourself may have encountered in some form at school. You can also learn more about each fairy and play some games at Disney's website.

Another book you may be interested in is Fortune's Magic Farm by Suzanne Selfors. Isabelle works in a dreadful factory in a constantly dreary, rainy town to support herself and her grandmother. A surprise inheritance leads her to Fortune's Farm, a place where the sun always shines and magical things happen. Isabelle wonders how she can bring the magic of Fortune's Farm to her hometown to help her friends. But Mr. Supreme, the evil factory owner, has his own plans!

I, Lorelei by Yeardley Smith is a book that will be received by middle schoolers.
As the Swan Catalog says:"In letters to her recently deceased cat Mud, eleven-year-oldLorelei chronicles the ups and downs of her sixth-grade year, during which her parents separate, she gets a part in the school play, and she becomes friends with the cutest boy in her grade." Whew! Sounds like one busy girl!

Hoping for Spring!

I don't know about you but I am soooo ready for spring! Too much snow, slushy streets and gray skies! These three books really lifted my spirits and I hope they lift yours, too.

Easter Bunny Blues by Carol Wallace is an Easy Reader chapter book, meant for those children just learning to read (approximately first thru early third grades). The Easter Bunny has the flu and Petey and Old Jack are determined that children will still get their Easter baskets. All the animals on and around the farm contribute time and resources to create the baskets. Cooperation is the theme here (along with a little springtime magic!)

Rhy ming Dus t Bunnies by Jan Thomas is hysterical! Large, brightly colored dust bunnies have fun rhyming words, except for Bob. For some reason, he just doesn't seem to be into rhyming words. Bob saves the dust bunnies once but....read this picture book! Hey, that reminds me that spring cleaning is around the corner...poor dust bunnies!

Fletcher and the Springtime Blossoms by Julia Rawlinson tells the story of our old friend Fletcher the fox as he becomes alarmed by the appearance of what he thinks is snow. One of the most prolific and popular authors, James Patterson, has created a website promoting reading: http://www.readkiddoread.com/ When Patterson's own son seemed indifferent to reading, Patterson not only began to write children's books, he created this website to help kids, parents and teachers find those books that will appeal to kids who just don't want to read. Much like Jon Scieszka's http://www.guysread.com/, Patterson has assembled a site that is easy to maneuver and appeals to kids. Not only does he highlight current fiction and nonfiction, he also lists these books by style (great illustrated books, great transitional books, great page turners and great advanced reads) and then breaks it down into age categories. Colorful book covers make the site appealing and by clicking on each, parents or kids can read a review of the book. Books listed there are current and popular here at the library so I know Patterson has really done his homework. Try it out!

An exciting podcast from the ALA midwinter conference announced the winners of the Newbery and Caldecott awards yesterday. This is the equivalent of the Oscars here in Libraryland! This podcast had Ms. Barnes and I glued to our monitors and gasping in surprise, as there were some unexpected winners. How many of them have you read? I just finished "The Graveyard Book" and it was spectacular! If you are a fifth through seventh grader, you should read this unusual horror book. Imagine, a child raised by ghosts in a graveyard and saved from death with the help of the Sleer. What's a Sleer? Imagine a huge snake with three corpses' heads....creepy!

It's almost time for the annual Storytube contest at the Gail Borden Library in Elgin. What is a Storytube? Children from around the country video themselves booktalking their favorite books, complete with costumes and different locations. How cool is that! It is simple to enter:

· Make your video up to two minutes long
· Feature one book in your video
· Enter as an individual or as part of a group of two to five people by uploading your video to YouTube or TeacherTube

Picture Books for All!

Most parents love the closeness they share as they read to their children. There are those among us, however, that also read picture books for their own enjoyment--yes, I'm one of those!

In "The Boy Who Went Ape" by Richard Jesse Watson and Benjamin James Watson, it's field trip season for Alcatraz Elementary School. Benjamin has been very naughty, inadvertently releasing a chimp at the zoo who grabs his coat and hat, locks him in the cage and takes his place on the bus. You can imagine the adventures the chimp, Ms. Thunderbum the teacher, and the rest of the class has. Hint--a bank robbery is involved! Large, bright illustrations highlight the story perfectly.

"Doo-Wop Pop" by Roni Schotter is the story of five shy kids in school and the melodious Mr. Searle, a janitor who used to sing doo-wop back in the day. Mr. Searle finds just the right way to encourage his five fledglings to have confidence and believe in themselves. This is a universal issue that has a satisfying solution. A must read!

Advertised as "a petrifying parody", "Goodnight Goon" by Michael Rex is a take-0ff on the much loved classic "Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown. We find a little wolfman getting ready for bed, saying goodnight to the hairy claws, set of jaws, a loud screechy bat and a black hat. For all you monster lovers out there and your kids too!

"Dimity Du mpty: The Story of Humpty's Little Sister" by Bob Graham puts a new spin on the Humpty Dumpty story. The Dumpty family works as circus performers--all but Dimity, that is. Dimity prefers to stay out of the spotlight, playing her tiny flute away from the crush of the crowds. That mischevious Humpty, while spraypainting his name on a wall, has a great fall and it's up to Dimity to find the courage to summond the help Humpty needs.

In Francesca Chessa's "Holly's Red Boots" the first snow of the season has fallen and Holly is anxious to get outside. She tries on quite a selection of items before she finds her boots. (The sombero will have you giggling!) This is a silly story, guaranteeing many laughs.

What a rash of good books, right?! I read two historical fictions and a fun fantasy this last weekend that I know one of your readers will fly through!

"The Floating Circus" by Tracie Vaughn Zimmer begins with two brothers in an orphanage. The oldest, Owen, is a daredevil, while his younger brother, Zach, is kind and quiet. While climbing the highest tree on the orphanage's yard on a dare, Owen falls and injures his arm, rendering it useless. After healing the two boys are put on an orphan train to the West, but Owen fears no one will adopt Zach if he has a handicapped brother and jumps from the train. With the help of a freed slave, Solomon, Owen gets a job on a circus paddleboat. All the elements of a Mark Twain adventure are here--life on the river, learning compassion and acceptance and just growing up. A marvelous, exciting book for anyone but great for your reluctant reader! Why not look up the history of the floating circus?

"The Leanin' Dog" by K.A. Nuzum. It's the 1930's and Dessa Dean has suffered a terrible tragedy. While walking with her mother in the woods , a massive snowstorm made them lose their way home. Dessa Dean's mom died as Dessa Dean lay next to her. Dessa Dean suffered frostbite on her ears and can no longer leave her house, as it brings back those memories of her mom. One day Dessa hears scratching on her door and finds a brown dog. Will Dessa Dean be able to lure this dog into the house? And will her big, gruff father chase away the dog as it growls menacingly at him? This remarkable dog will help Dessa conquer her fears, reunite her with her father, and bring back the spirit of the holidays. Again, check out the history of the 1930's while you're at it!

More Holiday suggestions

I just read the funniest book and I am positive your third through sixth grader will be rolling on the ground when he/she reads it, too!

Author Jon Scieszka is not only the first National Ambassador for Young People's Literature but he truly understands why boys in particular are reluctant readers. In his autobiography"Knucklehead", Mr. Scieszka relates what it was like growing up as one of six brothers. Some of the stunts they pulled will have you laughing so hard, you'll cry! This is my number one pick for third through sixth graders.

My next choice is "Barnaby Grimes: The Curse of the Night Wolf" by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. The authors of The Edge Chronicles series are back with a story about Barnaby Grimes, a messenger (or tick-tock boy as they were called) in old London. Barnaby's friend Old Benjamin is missing, his favorite chair found broken and bloody in the street. Reports of attacks by huge wolves circulate throught Barnaby's favorite haunts. When Barnaby is attacked and begins to investigate, he finds links to Dr. Callwallder and his miraculous new tonic. As the flap on the cover says "A gloriously macabre tale...packed with intrigue, horror and fantastic illustrations." Werewolves, anyone?

Those toys from "Toys Go Out" are back again in "Toy Dance Party" by Emily Jenkins. Lumphy the stuffed buffalo, plush blue StingRay, and hopefully round Plastic the ball are depressed. Honey, their owner, has gone on vacation and left them at home, taking the detested Barbies instead. Honey is getting older and finding new interests and, as the toys feel unloved, they, too, expand their horizons by visiting other areas of the house and finally noticing other toys that they previously dismissed. Wonderful book for your third through fifth graders. By the way, there are obscure references in this book to "The Tale of Despereaux" by Kate DiCamillo, another excellent book for this age group. Try both!

"The Youngest Templar: Keeper of the Grail" by Michael P. Spradlin is the tale of Tristan, an orphan raised by monks, who accepts the invitation by Sir Thomas, Knight of the Templar, to become his squire on a trek to the Holy Land. Tristan runs afoul of Sir Hugh, another knight who seems to know more about Tristan than Tristan does himself. Between avoiding Sir Hugh's cruelty, outrunning the Hashsashins and protecting an important package entrusted to him by Sir Thomas, Tristan and his friends struggle their way from one adventure to the other. If your fifth and sixth graders showed interest in "The DaVinci Code", they will revel in this book.

Turkey Bowl by Phil Bildner. Ethan is especially excited about Thanksgiving this year. In prior years, he has not been old enough to participate in the family football game. This year he is, but an unexpected snow storm has delayed his family members. Dejected, Ethan goes outside to commiserate with his friends and realizes they now have enough players from the neighborhood to play.

Nathan's Hanukkah Bargain by Jacqueline Dembar Greene. Nathan has carefully saved his money for his very own menorah. He and Grandfather shop and shop and can't find one in their price range. About to give up, Nathan spots the perfect menorah in a thrift shop and, remembering Grandfather's stories about dickering for goods in the old country, bargains his way to the menorah of his dreams.

The Dog Who Saved Santa by True Kelley. Santa as you've never seen him! With the help of his take-charge dog Rodney and a self-help video, young Santa Claus mends his lazy and irresponsible ways.

I See Santa Everywhere by Glenn McCoy. A boy feels he's being stalked by Santa. The picture of Santa as Elvis is priceless!

When Santa Lost His Ho! Ho! Ho! by Laura Rader. Poor Santa is exhausted and can't seem to find his hohoho. Mrs. Claus and the elves try everything but a letter from little Holly finally brings it back.

We all know what a priceless gift a book is, don't we? It's the gift that fuels imagination, cures boredom, and stealthily educates your child under the guise of entertainment. Here are just a few more picture books you may want to consider as you begin holiday shopping:

Millie in the Snow by Alexander Steffensmeier. Millie the Mail Cow becomes lost before Christmas. Hmmm, does the mail carrier have a crush on the farmer?

Drummer Boy by Loren Long. After accidentally being thrown away, a beloved toy drummer boy goes on an adventure that eventually brings him back to a warm home, where he is placed near baby Jesus in a manger scene.

Sam the Snowman by Susan Winget. Everyone is waiting for the littlest snowman to make snow. (I was impressed with the beautiful illustrations in this book.)

Fanny by Holly Hobbie. Based on Holly Hobbie's own experiences as a child. Fanny wants a Connie doll badly but her mother says absolutely not, so Fanny sews her own doll.

Cat and Mouse by Ian Schoenherr. A cat and a mouse play together nicely--and not so nicely--to the nursery rhymes, "Hickory, Dickory, Dock" and "Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Mo."

Too Many Toys by David Shannon. In an effort to stem the mess around the house, Spencer's mom decides to get rid of some toys. But Spencer has other ideas!

Princess Peepers by Pam Calvert. When the other princesses make fun of her for wearing glasses, Princess Peepers vows to go without, but after several mishaps--one of which is especially coincidental--she admits that she really does need them if she wants to see.

The Little Rabbit Who Liked to Say Moo by Jonathan Allen. When Calf hears Rabbit out in the field mooing he feels inspired to give a great big baa and soon all the other creatures on the farm realize they're not limited to their own language but can enjoy experimenting with others as they think "outside the box."

Here are three new picture books you and your children will enjoy. In "Uncle Monarch and the Day of the Dead" by Judy Goldman, Lupita and her beloved Tio Urbano watch the monarch butterflies return every year, just in time for Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Elderly Tio Urbano cautions Lupita never to hurt or capture the monarch butterflies because they are the souls of their loved ones returning to participate in the holiday. But Tio Urbano passes away before Day of the Dead and Lupita and her family must complete the celebration themselves, finding comfort in age-old traditions. I learned so much about the Day of the Dead from this book and I know your little ones will be fascinated by the different customs, too.
"The Red Sled" by Patricia Thomas is the perfect book for your littlest readers! Large colorful illustrations and two word text on each page (fat hat, knit mitt) will grab their attention as a boy and his father have an exhilarating time sledding at night.
Budding graphic novel and superhero lovers will delight in "Traction Man Meets Turbodog" by Mini Grey. The first illustration shows a father chastising his son to please stay out of the mud as the boy plays with his superhero toy. The boy's imagination kicks in as Traction Man and TurboDog fight off germs and tromp through mud and water to find Traction Man's missing pet Scrubbing Brush. A dip in the tub revitalizes Traction Man and Scrubbing Brush but what will happen to poor battery- powered TurboDog? A lovely romp through a young child's imagination!

Banned Book Week is coming soon. The American Library Association sets aside one week a year to celebrate our freedom to read whatever book we like and to freely express our opinions.
From Sept. 27th to Oct. 4th, why not select a book that has been challenged in libraries throughout the United States and see what all the fuss is about. I think you'll find that some of your favorite books are on the challenged list. Yes, "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak is there! "Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo, "Charlotte's Web" by E.B. White,
even "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl all have been challenged at one time or another. Take a look at this list of frequently challenged books and celebrate your freedom to read!

Good Books Come in Threes!

I guess good books come in threes. Let's start with "Julia Gillian (And the Art of Knowing)" by Alison McGhee. Julia Gillian is an only child whose busy parents are both working on their degrees. Julia Gillian has started reading a green book about a dog but, with her "art of knowing" skills tingling, suspects something sad happens to the dog. With her parents too busy to notice her distress, Julia Gillian pulls on her favorite raccoon mask (it makes her feel strong) and relies on her network of protective friends to help her through her fear. Third through fifth graders will enjoy this book.
All you ghost lovers will enjoy "School Spirit", first in the Suddenly Supernatural series by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel. Kat's mom is a medium who helps others with their ghostly problems. Kat is freaking out because her psychic skills have suddenly appeared. How she and her best friend Jac, a wunderkind celloist, deal with the mean girls at middle school, the school ghost and the mysterious dark shadow in the library will have you laughing and wishing for a sequel. Fourth through sixth graders, line up for this one!
Another fantasy novel, "Puddlejumpers" by Mark Jean and Christopher C. Carlson, deals with the mystery of an orphan that no one wants. Ernie Banks was found on the doorstep of an orphanage as a baby, a baseball card and an acorn crystal the only clues to his identity. Now a thirteen-year-old, Ernie has become a troublemaker. Unfortunately, his latest pranks have brought him in front of a judge and he declares that Ernie must join a three week work program on a Farmer Russ's farm. Farmer Russ is kind and hardworking but hides a terrible truth--his only son was kidnapped as a baby. Ernie is determined to find out what happened to the baby and enlists the aid of Joey, a girl from a neighboring farm. With the help of the Puddlejumpers,
Ernie and Joey will have to face the most frightening creatures of the underworld to save the world as they know it. Hey, parents, looking for a book for that 3rd-5th reluctant reader? Well, just clatter on over to the library and check out "Billy Bones: Tales from the Secrets Closet" by Christopher Lincoln. When poor Millicent's parents die, she is taken to live with her evil, social climbing Uncle Bigham. When investigating her new surroundings in the attic, she happens upon the family's Secrets Closet, inhabited by friendly Billy Bones and his parents. Pirate ghosts, monstrous beings, and Uncle Grim (the Grim Reaper) combine for an adventurous, amusing read. Be assured that, while the story deals with skeletons and ghosts, it will not send your youngsters hiding under the covers. Instead, you'll find them cheering Millicent and Billy's friendship and booing the politics of the underworld. (Yes, they have politics there, too!) From the way the book ends, I think it would be fair to say we are seeing the beginning of another "haunting" series.

Yoko, Keisha Ann and Splat the Cat

Rosemary Wells has done it again! Her new book, "Yoko Writes Her Name", features Yoko, a kind and gentle Japanese kitty. When she goes to school and writes her ABCs as she did in Japan, two mean classmates make fun of her and tell her she will never graduate because she can't write them in the English alphabet. The next day, with the help of her understanding teacher and a new friend, Yoko begins to enjoy her new school and, when it becomes appparent the mean girls may not graduate because they can't write their names in Japanese, Yoko graciously steps in to save the day.
In "Keisha Ann Can" by Daniel Kirk, Keisha Ann demonstrates that she can follow the rules to make school fun. Each page begins with rhyming questions ("Who can catch the school bus for the early-morning ride? Who can wait in line until it's time to go inside?) and ends with a resounding "Keisha Ann can!" Your children will love to join the refrain. This is a much needed positive introduction to the first day of school.
Splat the cat is afraid of his first day at school. He finds every excuse not to go, from not having clean socks to "the front door won't let me out, Mom." What Mom doesn't know is that Splat has packed his pet mouse in his lunchbox for company. Just think...a mouse in Cat School...doesn't sound good, does it? Pat yourselves on the back and be sure you mention to your teacher how many books you read this summer. Did you know that summer reading serves a real purpose, other than winning awesome prizes? Each summer, as you read, your brain is exercising, getting ready to return to school. When school starts, you will find it much easier to resume your studies because your brain is now buff! Well, our Home Run Wednesdays will draw to a close next week. The lucky few who got free tickets to the Windy City Thunderbolts will have a blast! Don't forget to show Ms. Dee or Ms. Sarah your little blue ticket to get a little special something at the game. Then we're off on August 1st to the Dolphin Lake pool for our Gold Medal Splash Fest summer reading finale. You'll find your ticket in the completion bag that you can pick up at the Youth Services Desk. Lots of good snacks and fun in the cool water with your reading pals--what's better than that!
It's hard to believe but I'm already making plans for the fall K-2 Storyhour. You'll remember that last year our K-2 kids heartily embraced healthy snacks at storyhour and I plan on some yummy, healthy and unusual snack surprises again this session. So enjoy the end of our summer reading program but keep in mind that, really, K-2 is not that far in the distance. See you at the pool!

Here are four cautions:
1. There is no grace period so a $2 a day late fee will be added should you return the passes late.
2. You may not return the pass through the book drop.
3. If you were to lose the passes, there is a $10 fee in addition to the not refunded deposit.

Illinois Authors

I've just read two new books whose authors have ties to Illinois. In "Found" by Margaret Peterson Haddix, adopted Jonah and his best bud Chip receive mysterious envelopes in the mail. Opening them up, they find a plain white card that says "They are coming for you." Chip snoops around and finds out his parents have not been honest with him and that Chip was also adopted. Mix in a freaky black jet full of infants and you have an awesome tale of suspense and time travel. Haddix's tie to Illinois? She used to be a professor at a college near Danville in central Illinois. In Andrea Beatty's "Cicada Summer", silent Lily lives unnoticed in her small rural town during the Depression. Her brother has died and Lily has not spoken since that day, preferring to let the town folk think she is brain damaged. She "borrows" books from the school library and hides to read them. One day Tinny moves in with her aunt Fern and begins to torment Lily. But Lily has noticed Tinny stealing food and money from her aunt. What is Tinny up to? And who is the repairman who wears shiny city shoes in the country? This book of historical fiction comes to an exciting end and I know you'll all enjoy it! New Graphic Novels

Well, after all the excitement of summer reading sign-up day, I am glad to get back to checking in some new graphic novels. We have just received the second, third and fourth in the Yotsuba&! series. That charming Yotsuba tries her hand at art, has an experience with a water gun, takes to the street as Flower Cupid and masters rock-paper-scissors. We've also received the second and third of the Baby-Sitters Club graphic novels. In "The Truth About Stacey", Stacey moves to a new town, deals with her diabetes and finds three new friends. In "Mary Anne Saves the Day", Mary Anne has an atomic meltdown and loses her Baby-Sitters Club friends. Will Mary Anne find her way back to her friends? We hope so! Remember the Hardy Boys? They are now also available in graphic novels and we now own "Dude Ranch o' Death." Frank and Joe are sent to a "tough love" camp to find several missing teens and to figure out just what is going on at that camp. These graphic novels are all waiting in our new book section.

Summer Reading is almost here!

Wow! Only one more week until summer reading sign-up! Our theme this year is "Get in the Game, Read!" and we have some seriously cool programs lined up for our Home Run Wednesdays. To start us off, Anna Stange will sing songs about your favorite storybooks and encourage you to sing too. X-games medalist Matt Wilhelm will join us and provide thrilling moments with his BMX bike show. We'll have our famous family movie day and this year the theme of the movie will, of course, be sports. On Race Day, we will have real race cars in the parking lot and the drivers will be available to answer any questions you have about racing. By the way, for all you girls who dream of speed, our own Miss Sarah will be available to answer your questions about racing because she is a race car driver in her spare time! After all that excitement, come to the library the following Wednesday for an awesome board game bonanza. Gaming in the Great Outdoors follows with Tumblebus for our smaller readers and Climb On's climbing wall for the older readers.
There will be free tickets while they last for Library Night at the Windy City Thunderbolts. Don't forget us during Homewood Days, either, as we will be featuring the James Hart Step Dancers! Is "Paperboy" a Graphic Novel?

We have received the first two books in the "Paperboy" series written by 13-year-old Jeremiah Omari, and the third is on order. In the first book, 11-year-old Michael defends his schoolmates from bullies. As he becomes a superhero, he runs afoul of the LOEP, the League Of Evil People.
There are the occasional illustrations in each chapter but the book contains more text than a "normal" graphic novel. It is selected for graphic novel reading lists. Does this book qualify as a graphic novel? Hmmm...you decide. It's great to see an African-American superhero, isn't it! You go, Omari!

Unicorns Are Here!

Noses, Alphabets and Archie

Vivienne Flesher's new book, Alfred's Nose, will leave you chuckling and begging your family for a dog. Alfred is a pug and his family dresses him in bat wings and walrus tusks, a pink leotard and devil's horns, duck bills, crocodile snouts, and even an elephant's trunk. Oh my! You'll still be laughing the next day!
In Bill Mayer's All Aboard: A Traveling Alphabet, you'll find graphic art deco illustrations from A to Z. (My favorite is the green and black C for cycle.) These illustrations are so good that you may just want to frame them.
Archie's War by Marcia Williams is a written journal of 10-year-old Archie Albright's life in London during World War I. At first Archie's parents reassure him that the Germans will not kill children. But when bombs start to destroy his neighborhood, Archie is not so certain that things will turn out okay. Archie's father goes off to war, followed by his older brother. This book has postcards of the era, cartoon illustrations and flip pages. It is the story of a nation at war and how adults and children coped with the devastation of their lives and community.

Make Your Own Potato Pet!

We made a fun little Potato Pet craft in our K-2 class and I thought it would brighten your day, too-- especially since we're expecting rain and bad weather later today. All you need is four toothpicks, a potato, some potting soil and some grass seed. Have your mom cut a wedge lengthwise on your potato. Take a fork and scrap the inside of the wedge a little. Poke the toothpicks into the under side of your potato to make legs. Now just add potting soil and grass seed in the wedge and water a little. You don't need too much because of the moisture from the potato itself. In a few days, you will see your potato sprout hair! Watch the areas on the potato called eyes. Pretty soon, those will sprout also and you may have a potato pet with a beard! Want to try another? Let's make this fabulous Hairy Caterpillar!

New Picture Books

Just got some great new picture books in. "Madison and the Two Wheeler" by Dr. Vanita Braver finds Madison wanting to try out her bike without training wheels. But a fall frightens her and she is reluctant to climb back onto that bike. When she sees brave baby birds trying to fly, she decides if they can do it, so can she. Lois Ehlert's "Oodles of Animals" has lovely rhyming test and beautiful, colorful paper collages. "Don't Worry, Bear" by Greg Foley has Bear looking out for his caterpillar friend all winter but when spring comes, caterpillar has disappeared. "Amelia Makes a Movie" by David Milgrim will have you shouting,"I can do this!" When Mom and Dad are too busy to play, Amelia and her brother write a movie script, paint the scenery and make the costumes. The two siblings cooperate and create a fabulous movie for their family to enjoy. "Come Fly With Me" by Satomi Ichikawa tells the story of Woggy the stuffed dog and Cosmos the wooden airplane. Both want a flying adventure but get a little more than they had bargained for. "Twenty-six Princesses" by Dave Horowitz has an alphabet of princesses, complete with rhyming text and charming illustrations.

New Action Series Rocks!

Ed Decter, the author of the hit movies "Something About Mary" , "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" and "Santa Claus" 2 and 3 has written an exciting new adventure series that will keep you nailed to your chair! The Outriders series consists of "Expedition to Blue Cave" "Expedition to Willow Key", "Expediton to Pine Hollow" and "Expediton to Surf Island". I read "Expedition to Pine Hollow" and thoroughly enjoyed each capitivating minute. Cam Walker and his friends (the Outriders) decide to climb up to Eagle Tower, a tall ancient rock tower some say was built by American Indians. As they hike up the mountain, they are passed by giant mining trucks. They know that bauxite mining is going to be allowed by the Department of the Interior and realize that their chance to explore the tower will be gone in five days. What they don't know is that the mining company plans to dynamite that day. The Outriders and Howie, the giant Newfoundland dog, are trapped underground in an ancient American Indian village when the dynamiting begins. When they finally escape, the mining company captures all but Cam and he must find someone to help rescue his buds. The action is nonstop in this series--braving the treacherous currents of an underground river, confronting a black bear, being chased by humongous mining vehicles, flying (and crashing) an ultralight airplane, jumping over (and hitting) a fishing trawler with another boat...it just goes on and on! Anyone from fourth through eighth grade will enjoy this book. I know I did!

New Paperbacks!

I've ordered some new paperback series for you readers in fifth through eighth grades and they should be in soon. We have the first three books in the "My Sister the Vampire" series by Sienna Mercer. Ivy and Olivia, twin sisters that were separated at birth, meet when Olivia moves to a new town. The new school is kinda creepy and old and alot of the kids dress in black. Olivia and Ivy, extreme opposites in many ways, realize that they must be twins as they share birthdays, wear identical rings from their birth parents and were born in the same town. The usual humorous twin switching occurs and things seem great--until Olivia finds out that Ivy is a vampire.
I've also ordered the Red Rock Mysteries. Written by the authors of the Left Behind series, Jerry B. Jenkins and Chris Fabry, this Christian series finds Bryce and Ashley (more twins!) embroiled in one mystery after the other. I have heard from other librarians that this series appeals to guys so read up! This series would be best suited for fifth through eighth graders.
I have also received some of the Jake Maddox's sports books in time for summer reading. (Hey! Summer reading begins June 11th! Our theme is "Get in the Game, READ!") "Board Rebe l", "Motocross Doublecross", "Slam Dunk Shoes" and "Snowboard Due l" are currently on shelf and there are more to follow! Fourth through eighth grader sports fans will enjoy these!

Tennyson Is Not A Poet!

Another weekend, another fantastic book! "Tennyson" by Lesley M.M. Blume is a book about eleven year old Tennyson and her sister Hattie who live in a bayou-like area with their unconventional parents. (Yes, Tennyson is a girl. Her mother, an aspiring author, named her after the famous poet.) Tennyson's mother has run off and her father pursues her, dumping the two children at the family's historic plantation with eccentric Aunt Henrietta and Uncle Twigs and grumpy Zulma. Tennyson writes a story of her family history during the Civil War and sends it to the "Sophisticate" magazine, hoping to lure her mother back home. This is great historical fiction with wonderful descriptions of how the elite lived before the war. Chandeliers in trees swaying in the wind, huge spiders spinning webs that will be covered in gold dust for a party, and the haunting feel of decay are just a few of the many images you'll carry around in your mind after reading this book. I truly hated to see this book end! Readers in fourth through eighth grade will devour this book! I just know you'll be seeing this book on an awards list soon.

Three New Spring Picture Books of Note

Thank goodness we are finally seeing evidence of spring! Here are three new spring picture books I think you'll enjoy. Eve Bunting is known for her gentle stories and once again has produced a winner. "You Were Loved Before You Were Born" tells of the preparation the whole family makes while anticipating a child's birth. Grandmother plants a rose bush, Grandfather brings in the rocking chair he rocked Mother in, and aunts, uncles and cousins all donate time and materials for the little one's birth. In "Arabella Miller's Tiny Caterpillar" by Clare Jarrett, Arabella brings home a caterpillar and watches his physical changes as he evolves into a beautiful butterfly. There is an explanation of a caterpillar's life cycle in the back of the book. "Grace for President" by Kelly DiPucchio explains the story of Grace, who wishes to be the first female president. Her school has a mock election and Grace is introduced to the world of politics. This book is not only has a good storyline but has an explanation of the Electorial College. What a great way to introduce your children or classroom to politics in this exciting year!

Hey, Girls, You're Up!

It seems like I have been reading alot of books for boys. Now, girls, it's your turn!
The Magic Half by Annie Barrows tells the story of Miri, a girl who has older twin brothers and younger twin sisters. After moving to a new home, Miri is lucky enough not to have to share her bedroom with her little sisters. But the bedroom is in the attic and the wallpaper is purple with orange vines and there's a bench in the closet big enough to be a coffin! After her brother breaks her glasses, Miri loses her temper, clocks him in the head with a shovel and is sent to her room. She notices a broken lens taped to the floor molding. When she holds it up to her eye, she is transported to 1935 and meets Molly. Molly insists that Miri was sent to the past to save her from greedy Horst, who wants Molly's inheritance. Molly must help Miri and get back to the future before.....well, read the book and find out! Third through fifth grade girls would love this book.
The Hope Chest by Karen Schwabach is historical fiction. Violet's older sister, Chloe, a suffragette, has left home and Mother and Father refuse to talk about her. When Violet finds a packet of letters written from Chloe to her, she realizes that Mother and Father have been hiding them from her. Violet decides to run away to New York to be with Chloe. She is befriended by Myrtle, an African American girl who is also unhappy with her life. Once they track down Chloe, they all travel together promoting women's right to vote. My favorite part of this book is the last paragraph:
"But now she knew what it was like to stand your ground. She knew what it was like to keep on when things seemed hopeless. And she knew that with patience and hard work, a radical, ridiculed idea--like women voting--could become as acceptable and ordinary as oatmeal." Whoa! Powerful! Fourth through eighth graders, here's a book that's captivating and will meet your historical fiction requirement for school.

Space and Computer Geeks!

If you are a computer or space geek, I have the perfect book for you. Lucy and Stephen Hawking, the world famous physicist and his daughter, have written George's Secret Key to the Universe. Together they have written a fabulous book dealing with ecology, space travel, black holes and super computers.
George lives with his ecological sensitive family and his pet pig, Freddy. One day Freddy escapes the confines of his pen, squeezes under the fence and runs into the abandoned house next door--except the house is no longer abandoned. George meets Annie and her dad, Eric. Eric is an absentminded scientist who, with the assistance of super computer Cosmos, teaches George about how planets are born, how they die and their relationship to black holes. Eric explains how pollution is ruining the earth and how finding another planet that is hospitable to humans is important. Unfortunately, the evil Dr. G. Reeper (Eric's teacher) is trying to steal Cosmos for his own devious scheme. This book is filled with facts and real photos of the universe. At the very end, George is giving a speech to his classmates and I think it is the best part of the book. Here is a snippet of that speech:
"All the people on Earth, the animals, the plants, the rocks, the air, and the oceans are made of elements forged inside stars. Whatever we might think, we are all the children of stars."
Fourth through eighth graders will love this book!

Donavan's Double Trouble

Wow! I just finished Donavan's Double Trouble by Monalisa DeGross and it's awesome!
Donavan's Uncle Vic has returned home from Iraq in a wheelchair. Donavan always looked up to Uncle Vic--he was a great basketball player, a fearless firefighter and all around great guy. But Uncle Vic is no longer the man he was before he was injured and Donavan doesn't know how to relate to the man he is now. In the meantime, Donavan is having trouble with math and Heritage Month is coming up at school. Grandma thinks displaying Uncle Vic's carvings at the school will help him feel better about himself but Donavan is not so sure. Strong support from family and friends help Donavan find his way. But what about Uncle Vic? Third through sixth graders, this is a great read!

Fancy Nancy, Speed Racer and Star Wars

"Challenge of the Masked Racer" and "Great Plan" are currently on shelf and four others are on order. If you are a race car fan, place your hold now before the movie is released! The Speed Racer books would appeal to third through fifth graders. Last but not least, we have purchased three new Star Wars easy readers: "Ready, Set, Podrace", "Beware the Dark Side", and "A Queen's Diary" all by Simon Beecroft.

Believe it or not, it's already time to register for our March session of Kindergarten thru Second Grade Storyhour. Registration begins on Saturday, February 9th. This session we will make no-bake cookies, try out some new-to-you fruits, munch on carrots and, of course, read some exceptional books. Good food and good books always go hand-in-hand, don't you think? (Well, clean hands, though!) The K-2 class is limited to 20 so hurry in or call Youth Services at (708) 798-0121 x 222. When you register, please let us know if your child has any food allergies.

New Graphic Novels

We've received three new junior graphic novels that I think you'll enjoy. "Gear School" by Adam Gallardo is a futuristic novel that deals with a thirteen-year-old cadet, Teresa Gottlieb, who is learning to drive war machines in the attempt to defeat the alien invaders. She is also learning about boys, school and awful instructors at the same time. Finally, action graphics for girls!
A new series called Twisted Journeys begins with "Captured by Pirates" by Justine and Ron Fontes. In this graphic novel series, you choose your own fate, either as a pirate or a member of the Navy. Last but not least, "Artemis Fowl the Graphic Novel" has arrived! (Don't you think it should have been a graphic novel first?) Mulch Duggins, in all his gaseous glory, and Holly Short, that spunky fairy, finally have been drawn and they match perfectly with what I imagined them to be.

Read Them or Weep!

Every so often we run across a book that we know has a great storyline but it just hasn't been checked out very often. Unfortunately, those books usually are removed from the collection for lack of activity. We've assembled a display, entitled it "Read Them or Weep" and showcased these poor overlooked books. There are horse stories, historical fiction about Native Americans, girlie books, boyish books and other savory tidbits. You'll find this display in the former reference area of the Youth Services department. So read these books and save their lives! Well, perhaps that was a bit dramatic but please take a look and try a few. We're sure you'll enjoy them.

Fun Polaroid craft!

Do your parents still own a Polaroid camera? Try this fun craft that you can do with your parents. Take a picture of someone you love. The Polaroid camera makes instant prints and takes some time to develop. When the picture is almost developed, cut off the surrounding white frame. Gently peal away the front from the back. You should have a thin piece of see through plastic with some goo still attached. Using rubber gloves and damp paper towels, have your parents gently wipe off the goo but be very careful, as it is toxic. You will go through many paper towels! When you have removed all the goo, you will be left with a ghostly image! Then, for fun, go back and check out the back part of the picture. It will have a really unusual greenish, purplish image of your loved one. How should you use these? Well, you could put it in your family's scrapbook and surround it with pics of your house--ooooo ghostly! Be cautious and don't place your backing pic too near a window, as the sun will slowly fade it. Have fun, be creative and I'd love to see your craft when you come to the library. Want more ideas? Storyhours are back!

Well, it's storyhour registration time again and we have some exciting news! Our Thursday night 6:30 Preschool Storyhour has now been changed to Starlight Storyhour. Starlight Storyhour will be a family storyhour--parents/caregivers will stay with their children. Siblings are invited to stay also. There will be a limit of 20 children but no registration is required. Miss Sarah has put together an awesome story hour for you and I know you'll be amazed at her creativity! Stories, activities, a snack and a craft will be included. Hey, you can even wear your pjs!

Our Tot Time, Preschool Storyhour, K-2 Storyhour and Field Days registration begins Saturday, January 12th.
As you recall, Tot Time is designed for 2 thru early 3 year olds. You will have your choice of Monday or Wednesday Tot Time at 11:00-11:30.
Preschool Storyhour is a 45 minute program designed for late 3 thru 5 year olds. It will meet on Wednesday at either 9:45 or 1:00.
K-2 (kindergarten thru second grade) Storyhour will meet Thursdays in February at 4:00-5:00. We will be celebrating Chinese New Year (eggrolls and fortune cookies, anyone?), making a freedom quilt for the Youth Services office window, reading some awesome books and just having a great time!
Last but not least is our Field Days at the Library. Thanks to the generosity of the Harris Loan program at the Field Museum, the Homewood Library is able to check out kits dealing with geography, geology and all sorts of fun stuff. This month's program will deal with geology. Due to the popularity of this program, we have restricted registration to 18.
